Choose the right field type

What each form field type collects, when to use it, and the settings that come with Dropdown, Checkbox, Rating and Upload.

You want a WhatsApp number, the city someone lives in and a photo of their best latte art. Put all three in plain text boxes and you get "9876 543 210 (whatsapp pls)", "blr" and a link to a Google Drive folder. Picking the right field type fixes most of that before anyone types.

Add a field

  1. Go to Forms and open your form, or click New Form.

  2. Click Add a field under your title. Once the form has fields, the button sits at the bottom of the field list.

  3. In Select a field, click the type you want. The Edit Field panel opens on the right.

  4. Fill in Field Title. That's the question people see.

You can't change a field's type after adding it. Delete the field and add the right type instead.

Text Input: Text, Number, Email, URL, Phone

  • Text: a one-line answer, such as a name or an Instagram handle. There's no multi-line paragraph field, so keep open questions short.

  • Number: digits only, such as "How many cups do you make a day?"

  • Email: checks that the answer looks like an email address. Turn on Email Verification to make people confirm it with a code; that's on the Pro, Ultimate and Business plans.

  • URL: a web address, such as a portfolio or shop link. People need to include https://, or the form asks them for a valid URL.

  • Phone: a phone number with a country flag picker. The flag starts on the visitor's country, and they can search for another one.

Location: Country

  • Country: a dropdown list of countries. Use it when you ship or run sessions in more than one country.

Location shows in the list but is greyed out, so you can't add it yet. For a city, use a Dropdown with your cities, or a Text field.

Date & Time: Date

  • Date: a calendar picker, such as "Which day suits you for a call?" Turn on Before Date or After Date to limit the days people can pick.

Multiple Elements: Dropdown, Checkbox, Rating

  • Dropdown: people pick one option from a list. New dropdowns start with Option 1, Option 2 and Option 3; type over them, click Add Option for more, or click the bin icon to remove one. Turn on Add "Other" Option to add an Other choice with a box where people type their own answer.

  • Checkbox: people tick as many options as they like, such as "Which days work for you?" Add "Other" Option adds an Other box with a "Please specify..." line.

  • Rating: a 1 to 5 score. Under Rating Symbol, choose five stars or five faces from sad to happy.

Keep at least one option in a Dropdown or Checkbox field. If you delete them all, Add Option disappears and you'll need to delete the field and add it again.

Files & Media: Upload

  • Upload: people attach one file, such as a photo of their work or a PDF brief. Add a second Upload field if you need two files.

To limit what people can send, turn on Allow specific file types and pick Images, PDFs or both:

  • Images accepts JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP photos.

  • PDFs accepts PDF, Word and Excel files, but not PowerPoint.

With the switch off, people can pick any file, but only photos, PDFs, Word, Excel and plain-text files upload.

Each file can be up to 10 MB, even though the upload box on your form says "Size limit: 2MB".

Reorder or remove fields

  • Drag a field by the dotted handle on its left to move it up or down.

  • Click the bin icon at the top right of a field to delete it.

  • Field Placeholder sets the grey hint text inside the box. Checkbox, Rating, Upload and Phone fields don't have one.

Click Publish, or Update on a live form, to make your changes live. Here's how a Rating with faces and a Country field look to the people filling in your form:
