Understand contact sources and exports

Check a contact's source and export the audience group you actually need.

Preparing a contact list for your team? Check the source and filters first so you don't export your whole audience when you only need one campaign's contacts.

Check where contacts came from

Open Audience in the correct workspace. Use Search Audience to find a contact, or the Source Automation filter to focus on contacts associated with an automation.

Use Columns to show the available information you need. A source value is useful context, but it isn't a complete timeline of every interaction that person has had with you.

Choose the group before exporting

Select the relevant saved segment or apply your filters. For the filter and save controls, follow Filter and segment contacts in Audience.

Check the visible contacts and active conditions before continuing. For example, a list of people who submitted a consultation form is different from everyone who ever sent you a DM.

Download the CSV

  1. Click Export Audience.

  2. Wait for the download to finish.

  3. Open the CSV and check its columns and records before importing or sharing it.

The export uses the active audience selection and filters. If the file isn't what you expected, check that selection before making another export.

Contact exports may contain personal information. Keep the file in an appropriate private location and share it only with people who need it.

If the export fails

Read the error shown and check that the workspace is still accessible. If it continues to fail, send support the workspace, selected segment or filters, and approximate time. Don't assume that every export error is a plan limitation.
