Use DM keywords in Flow Builder

Configure included and excluded words for incoming Instagram DMs.

Asking people to DM you a word is an easy way to start a specific conversation. Use a keyword trigger so the guide campaign responds to requests for the guide, not every unrelated message in your inbox.

Match your call to action

  1. Open the trigger and choose Sends you a DM.

  2. Add the keyword or phrase you promote, such as guide.

  3. Check whether the rule is configured for keywords or any message. Use the broader option only if that is intentional.

  4. Add excluded keywords where you need to keep particular messages out of the campaign.

  5. Add Send a DM with the promised response and run Validate.

Check the phrases people actually use

Keyword matching ignores case. Test your expected phrases using the configured matching behavior rather than assuming every partial word or misspelling will qualify. An excluded match prevents entry.

For a guide campaign, check the promoted word, a natural request such as please send the guide, an unrelated message, and a phrase covered by your exclusions. Decide which should qualify, then compare with the observed results.

Avoid overlapping campaigns

Review other active automations using the same keyword or broad message rules. Overlapping rules make it harder to tell which campaign a person entered.

When ready, activate and test from a second Instagram account. If the expected reply doesn't arrive, use Flow Builder troubleshooting. To route people after they enter, see Conditions.
