Setting up Comment to DM

Turn Instagram comments into automated DMs that start real conversations

Updated over a week ago

Create the Automation

Click Automations Click New Automation → Click DM from Comments

Select a Post or Reel

Select a post or reel that will trigger the automation. As the first step you will be asked to select the post or reel comments from which will trigger a DM message to the user.

There are three options here:

Any post or reel

Any comment under any post will trigger this automation.

Next post or reel

The automation will be triggered when users leave comments under the next post or reel you publish after setting the automation live.

A specific post or reel
Only comments under this post or reel will trigger the automation.

Setup Keywords

Decide which words or phrases a comment must include to trigger the automation. You can also select Any keyword, that will trigger the automation for any comment.

You don’t need an exact match. As long as the keyword appears anywhere in the comment, the automation will trigger. For example, if your keyword is “link”, comments like “send link please”, “can I get the link?”, or “link pls” will all trigger the automation.

We also recognize close variations and small spelling differences, so things like “lnk”, “linnk”, or “linc pls” can still trigger the automation.

Capitalization doesn’t matter, so “LINK”, “Link”, and “link” are treated the same.

Send a DM

When someone’s comment matches your keywords, this step sends them a direct message automatically.

You can send a message that includes a link. You can customize this message with up to three links, making it easy to direct users to multiple destinations such as business pages, product details, or affiliate content. You can also send a text-only message without any links.

Publicly reply to comments

Replying to comments on your posts is a great way to boost engagement and attract new followers.

To keep replies natural and avoid spam, you can add multiple reply variations so messages don’t repeat. We’ll rotate between your variations to keep replies more natural.

We also limit how many comments get automatic replies.

Opening Message

The Opening DM is the first message sent after someone engages with your selected post or reel. Think of it as a quick “Hey, are you available to chat?” before starting the conversation.

When someone taps the button in the Opening DM, they opt in to the chat. This confirms they’re ready to talk and allows you to send follow-up messages within the next 24 hours.

The Opening DM is optional and can be turned on or off anytime using the toggle.

Ask to follow before sending DM

Ask users to follow you before receiving the link. If someone isn’t already following your Instagram account, they’ll receive an additional DM prompting them to follow you first.

This check happens only once — after that, future automations skip this step and send your DM directly.

This helps grow your audience while ensuring the link is shared with engaged followers.

Note

The Opening DM must be enabled for this to work, as it collects the user’s consent to check if they follow you. It is also sent only once in a user’s lifetime, ensuring the follow check can run before delivering your content in the future.

Ask for emails in DMs

Ask for the user’s email address to stay connected beyond Instagram. This message is sent either after the Opening DM (if enabled) or as the first message in the automation (if the Opening DM is disabled). Collecting emails helps you grow your subscriber list and continue engaging with your audience outside of social media.

Follow up to re-engage

Send a follow-up DM if the link isn’t clicked. This message re-engages contacts who didn’t open the link, helping keep the conversation going and increasing the chances of turning initial interest into action.

Note

The Opening DM must be enabled for follow-ups to work. It is sent each time the automation runs to refresh the user’s consent, allowing you to continue messaging them within the next 24 hours.
